There are several ways to go about creating a web site. First, you should know is that web pages are generally written in a computer language called "HTML". There are also more advanced languages such as Java, Perl, DHTML, Javascript and others that can be used or combined with HTML to produce a web page with more capabilities. Fortunately it is not neccessary to learn any of these languages to design a web page.
If you are not interested in learning the HTML language there are many software applications out there that will write the HTML for you. These software applications make it user-friendly to design a web page. No special knowledge is needed. These are called WYSIWYN (What You See Is What You Need) editors. You may also see or hear them called HTML editors. In this rapidly changing environment software applications that used to be called HTML editors are now commonly broken up into 2 catagories; HTML editors and WYSIWYN editors. To use true HTML editors you need to know some of the language. For WYSIWYN editors you do not. There are also WYSIWYN/HTML editor combinations. If you are interested in learning the HTML language you will find that you can learn some basics very quick. Getting beyond the basics will take a more concentrated effort. Go to our "Online Resources" for web sites that teach you the HTML language. You can use any text editor software (microsoft word, simple text, etc.) to write HTML but it is much more advantageous to use an "HTML editor" software. Viewed on your internet browser there is no difference between a web page written with Microsoft Word and a web page written with an HTML editor. The difference is in the ease of writing the HTML text. HTML editors provide numerous beneficial features. For instance an HTML editor can check to see if you made any errors in writing your HTML. It will also likely be important for you to be able to create images/graphics for your web site. There are many software applications out there that will enable you to create images/graphics for your site. There are also some web sites with free graphics. Go to "Online Resources" for image creation software and free graphics web sites.

Your Humboldt Netlink basic account comes with 20MB of space on our server for your web site. Your web site address is www.humboldt.net/~yourlogin, where "yourlogin" is your email (or login) name. You will need FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software to post your web page to the internet.

You will need to enter information to set up your FTP software:
host name - ftp.humboldt.net
user id - use your email name here
password - use your Humboldt Netlink password here
host type - use automatic detect
You will need to use the FTP software's guide for how to use the software. Once you have entered the correct info into the FTP software and have accessed your web site space you will see two folders. One is called htdocs and this is where you put your web pages. Your homepage must be named index.html or index.htm.
